Climatology Savindra Singh (Geography)
0Climatology Savindra Singh (Geography)
Climatology, as an atmospheric science, is one of the major branches of physical geography Climatology and meteorology are, in fact, the most dynamic sciences of all the branches of physical geography (eg. geomorphology, climatology and meteorology, oceanography and biogeography) and even earth sciences because this science deals with such aspects related to the atmosphere which undergo frequent changes at varying temporal and spatial scales and influence human beings most. The atmosphere, the core of the science of climatology and meteorology, is a complex thick gaseous envelope which surrounds the earth from all sides and is attached to the earth’s surface by the gravitational force and it is a significant component of the biospheric ecosystem because the life on the earth is due to the existence of this atmosphere otherwise the earth would have become barren like the moon. Besides, the atmosphere also fitlters the incoming solar electromagnetic radiation waves and thus prevents the ultraviolet radiation waves from reaching the earth’s surface and also plays key role in the distribution and redistribution of solar energy both horizontally and vertically on the earth’s surface.
The primary goal of climatology is to stady the identification, demarcation, distribution and mode of origin of different types of climates, causes and processes that lead to climatic variations both spatially and temporally at local, regional and global levels, different elements of weather and climate, the varying combinations of which give birth to different climatic types, the interactions of weather and climate with human society and consequent impacts on human activities and human health covering both physiological and psychological aspects. Besides the study of description of elements of weather and climate (such as insolation-atmospheric energy balance, temperature, air pressure, atmospheric circulation, humidity and precipitation), the study of applied aspects (applied climatology) including the explanations of relationships between climate and human activities and processes and causes of such relationships at varying spatial scales, is also given equal importance. Besides, the scope of climatology also includes the investigations of palaeoclimates and their reconstruction (climochronology), causes and factors of climatic changes and consideration of effective devices of weather forecasting. The study of atmospheric extreme events and hazards such as atmospheric disturbances (tropical cyclones, hurricanes, typhoons, tornadoes etc.) and cumulative atmospheric hazards (eg floods, droughts, extreme cold and heat waves etc.) has gained currency. Presently, applied climatology, global warming and climatic changes, changes in atmospheric chemistry, weather forecasting etc, have become more foccussed contents of climatology.
The 20th century climatology was characterized by growing concern about climate changes and international cooperations to tackle the problems. Various devices and methods were developed to recon-struct the palaroclimates based on glaciation, ice cores, mud cores, isotopes, ancient sediments, records of sea level changes, fossils of past flora and fauna etc. Now, the main concern is about the nature and magnitude of present and future climatic changes due to global warming consequent upon ozone depletion and

Economic And Social Geography R.Knowles,J.Wareing Made Simple Rupa
0Economic And Social Geography R.Knowles,J.Wareing Made Simple Rupa
The study of economic and social geography has changed considerably in recent years. The nature and distribution of human activity over the earth’s surface remains the core of the subject matter, but new questions are being asked about this activity and new techniques are being developed to allow them to be answered. The subject is now more problem-orientated and the analysis and explanation of current problems have become much more im-portant than simple description.
The purpose of this book is not to break new ground, but to review recent developments and bring together in one inexpensive volume work which is dispersed in many specialist textbooks. An attempt has been made to achieve a balance between oversimplification and over-elaboration, and to present essential concepts in a clear, concise manner. It is hoped that the interest of the reader will be sufficiently stimulated to investigate these concepts further, and the suggested further reading at the end of each chapter should provide guidance in this respect.
This book, together with its companion volume, Physical Geography Made Simple, should be of value to a variety of people. First, to those who are coming to academic geography for the first time, especially to those studying for GCE Advanced Level or ONC/OND examinations. It should also provide a concise introduction to first-year courses in further and higher education, including degree courses with a geography component, HNC/HND, and Certificate in Education courses. Technical jargon has been kept to a mini-mum and the book does not presuppose detailed background knowledge. It is hoped, therefore, that the layman will also find much of interest here. Secondly, it should be of value to geography teachers and others who wish to keep abreast of developments in the subject at a time of rapid change.

Geomorphology Savindra Singh UPSC (Geography)
0Geomorphology Savindra Singh
The rapidly evolving discipline of geomorphology in the science of landforms, has undergone sea change in methodology and approaches to the study of land forms and related processes since 1945 when RE Herton introduced quantitative methods for the analysis of merphometric characteristics of fluvially originated drainage hasins. A clear-cut uleavage surfaced in the discipline in the form of evolutionary approach involving progressive changes (decay) in landforms through long time period and process-response approach involving equilibrium model and steady state of landform developrisent alier 1950 Thus the need of hour is to integrate the cycle concept involving long-term historical evolution of landforms and non cyclic concept involving dynamic equilibrium, functional and process response models on the one hand and micro-geomorphology involving smaller spatial and shorter temporal scales and mega geomorphology having larger spatial and longer temporal scales on the other hand
The usefulness of any branch of knowledge les in the lact that it helps in identifying and ameliorating the problems, faced by human society, arising out of interactions of honian activities and geomorphic and environmental systems. From this stand point the science of geomorphology is of paranmount significance as this science studies the genesis and development of surface features of the earth. Most of the problems, which the present-day society is concerned with, are related to environmental degradation caused by human activities related to rapacious exploitation and irrational utilization of natural resources consequent upon rapidly Increasing human population and advancement in science and technology since 1860 in general and after second world war in particular resulting in the emergence of man as a significant geomorphic agent with capacity of changing the earth’s surface at the rate many times faster than natural geomorphological processes Thus, the study of mode of changes brought in physical natural systenis by man, as anthropogenous geomorphological process, through his economic activities and several developmental projects has become of much relavance a anthropogenic geomorphology, a new branch of applied geomorphology within geomorphology
The present book has been designed and its subject matters have been arranged in 30 chapters keeping the aforesaid facts into consideration wherein different aspects of geomorphology viz theoretical geomorphology (nature of geomorphology, fundamental concepts, theories of landscape development, climatic geomorphology, isostasy, plate tectonics, mountain building, morphometry etc. 1. geological (structural) geomorphology (rocks, earth’s movement, structural geomorphology), weathering, massmovement and hillslopes, historical geomorphology (denudation chronology and erosion surfaces), river system (drainage system and pattern, morphometry of fluvially originated dramage basins, river valleys and channel morphology, systemane or process-geomorphology (fluvial, karst, coastal, aeolian, glacial and periglacial geomorphology), regional, applied and anthropogenic (environmental) geomorphology have been discussed at length with ample and appropriate examples from India
The author expresses hes gratefulness to his friend and colleague Prof. R.C. Tiwan for giving constructive suggestions from time to time. Thanks are due to Dr. Alok Dubey and Dr. S. S. Ojha, my students and colleagues in the department, for having fruitful discussions in the preparation of the text 1 thankfully acknowledge the help rendered by my youngest son, Fr, Pankaj, in preparing the index of the book The auther is very much thankful to all the geoscientists whose works have been directly or indirectly utilized in the persent book Similarly, the author places on record the thankfulness to the publisher’s readiness and active cooperation in releasing the book in its present form within shortest possible time.

Human Geography Dr.S.D.Maurya
0Human Geography Dr.S.D.Maurya
Geography by nature is an interdisciplinary science that attempts to integrate the materials or phenomena that various sciences study separately. Any phenomenon studied in geography may be at the same time an object of study in some other systematic fields. Since geography cuts a section through all the systematic sciences, there is an intimate and mutual relation between it and each of these fields. The subject matters described by different branches of geography are variously concerned with different systematic sciences. For example, owing to similar subject matters, geomorphology is connected with geology, climatology with meteorology, oceanography with ocean science, soil geography with pedology, plant geography with botany and zoogeography with zoology Similarly, economic geography is related with economics, social geography with sociology, political geography with political science, racial geography with physiology and ethnography and so on. Thus, now the status of geography is established as an interdisciplinary science
Recently geography has become one of the most important optional subject in higher level competitive examinations like Union Public Service Commission and Provincial Public Service Commissions. The syllabus of Geography Optional for UPSC’s I.A.S. Mains is divided into two parts: (1) Physical Geography, and (II) Human Geography. This book contains the second part of Geography-Human Geography. This book is prepared containing the prescribed syllabus of Geography part two-Human Geography for I.A.S. Mains-examination.
